  5. The Mercury Mail Transport includes a simple mail server capable of
  6. performing a number of automatic operations in response to messages
  7. sent to it. Some or all operations may be restricted at some sites.
  8.  
  9. To activate the mail server, send a message to the special mail
  10. server account at the site (usually MAISER@host.domain), with the
  11. subject of the message set to anything (the mail server will quote
  12. your subject line back to you in its reply), and the commands the
  13. mail server should perform listed one per line in the message body.
  14. The mail server stops parsing commands when it encounters the end
  15. of the message, or a blank line. If your mailer adds a signature
  16. to your messages, make sure you enter a blank line after the last
  17. command. Unrecognized commands are ignored and generate no error.

  19. The following commands are recognized by the mail server at this
  20. site;
  21.  
  22.     HELP
  23.        - Takes no parameters, returns this text.
  24.  
  25.     VERIFY <address>
  26.        - Determines whether a particular address is valid at
  27.          this site.
  28.  
  29.     LOOKUP <string>
  30.        - Returns a list of users at this address who match
  31.          the string you supply. The string may contain * and
  32.          ? wildcard characters. This command may be disabled at
  33.          some sites.
  34.  
  35.     FINGER <address>
  36.        - Returns information about a user at this address. The
  37.          information returned may contain the user's FULL NAME,
  38.          whether or not mail is enabled or forwarded, and whether
  39.          mail reading will be confirmed. Also the content of the
  40.          file PROFILE in the user's mail directory will be returned.
  41.          This command may be disabled at some sites.

  43.     BOUNCE
  44.        - Takes no parameters - returns your message to you,
  45.          headers intact.
  46.  
  47.     LIST
  48.        - Shows all the mailing lists available at this site.

  50.     SUBSCRIBE <list-name>
  51.     or SUB <list-name>
  52.        - Asks Maiser to add you to a mailing list. If the list is
  53.          not a public list, you will receive an error message.
  54.  
  55.     UNSUBSCRIBE <list-name>
  56.     or SIGNOFF <list-name>
  57.     or UNSUB <list-name>
  58.        - Asks Maiser to remove your address from a mailing list.
  59.  
  60.     ADD <list-name> <address>
  61.        - If you are a moderator for the list, this command will
  62.          add an address to the list.
  63.  
  64.     REMOVE <list-name> <address>
  65.        - If you are a moderator for the list, this command will
  66.          remove an address from the list.
  67.  
  68.     ENUMERATE <list-name>
  69.     or REVIEW <list-name>
  70.        - Asks the maiser to send you the current subscribers to the
  71.          list. Enumeration of the list may be restricted on a list-
  72.          by-list basis unless you are a list moderator.

  74.     INDEX
  75.        - Asks the maiser for a list of files available by e-mail
  76.          at this site.

  78.     SEND <filename>
  79.        - Asks the mail server to send you a file. For a list of the
  80.          files available by e-mail from this site, see the INDEX command.

  82.     FINGER <address>
  83.        - Returns mail-specific information about the specified address
  84.          if it is local. Also returns the contents of the file PROFILE
  85.          if it exists in the user's new mail directory. The FINGER
  86.          command is intended to allow distribution of information such
  87.          as PGP keys and contact information.
  88.  
  89.     EXIT
  90.        - Terminates mail server command processing for a message.
  91.
